I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to recognize the heroism that goes along with the black cultural redefinition associated with hip hop and rap in the late ’80’s, early 90’s and beyond. Thinking back to our ancestors’ arrival in this country, it can’t be forgotten how there was a brutal attempt (mostly successful) at erasing the languages, religions, traditions and identity of their homeland. Ever since, Black Americans have been organically recreating our own heritage through music, dance, fashion, cuisine, art, literature and community.
